We live in a day and age of instantaneous gratification, due in large part to the wonders of microwave ovens, fast food, and of course the Internet. In a moment’s notice, we can “google” any topic we can think of, and find information in seconds. We live in a truly remarkable world that allows for the ultimate in convenience.
What has gotten me started reflecting on this topic in particular is actually a recent injury that I incurred while playing some paintball with friends down near Columbus, OH. While trying to make a heroic move for my team, I made a quick “spin” to find cover from the onslaught of paintballs that I was facing, and promptly found myself experiencing a burst of pain in the area of my right knee. When I spun, my foot stayed planted, but my knee did not. I ended up completely tearing my ACL. I will be undergoing surgery this Thursday to repair it so I can still run after my 3 year old son.
As I’ve been thinking about how I’ll need to rearrange things in my life for the next 6 weeks or so, I started thinking about telecommuting. The convenience of being able to work from home is an incredible one, but what amazes me even more is that it’s even possible. We live in an age of cell phones, instant messaging, email, and high speed information sharing. Many of us have jobs that we could feasibly do from home from a purely technical standpoint. (Never mind the issues of having to do at least some things face to face at some point in our careers.) The fact that I can, at my leisure, log in to our blogging software and put up an article, or work on a website’s back end, or any other number of technical tasks from the convenience of my home is truly comforting if it becomes necessary.
