Continuing our “Printing Vocabulary” mini-series, here is the second installment of common printing vocabulary you might hear us use in our interactions with you as we print your special project. Rob Banister, our Graphic Technical Specialist, and Dale Smith, our E-Commerce Graphic Designer, contributed their expertise to this post.

Resolution: Resolution is the number of dots or pixels of an image or photo. The higher concentration of dots or pixels per inch, the sharper the image will be when printed. Increasing the resolution also increases the image file size.

DPI: DPI stands for dots per inch. DPI is a measurement of resolution of a printed image determined by the number of dots that fit into one inch. For optimal results, your image must be at least 300 DPI at the final output size. Images on websites are typically 72 DPI, which is not a high enough resolution or quality for printing.

RGB: RGB refers to the colors red, green, and blue. These are most commonly used with television screens and computer monitors but are not used in printing. RGB files are usually converted to CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) files before printing. Colors may need to be adjusted after the conversion and may not appear correctly on your monitor.

CMYK: CMYK is an acronym for the colors cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). These are the industry standard process colors used in full color printing. The combination and percentages of these four colors can produce a wide array of colors.

Process Colors: Process Colors are the four basic colors used in printing to create the full spectrum of colors. These four colors are cyan (process blue), magenta (process red), yellow (process yellow), and black (process black).

PMS (Pantone® Matching System) Colors: PMS Colors are inks manufactured by Pantone®, Inc. The Pantone Matching System is the most popular color matching system used in the printing industry worldwide. A true PMS color is defined by a mixture of inks that will provide a specific color. Each PMS Color is assigned a code number and can be used to produce colors outside the CMYK gamut.

Standard Colors: “Standard Colors” is a term often used by a printing company when referring to a preselected offering of their most popular ink colors normally available to their customers at no extra charge. This may eliminate over-stocking many colors of inks that are not often requested or used.

Bleed: Bleed is the amount of image that extends past the trim size of the printed piece. Any artwork that has to bleed must have at least 1/16” past the trim size. If this is not provided, inconsistencies could occur when cutting the printing.

.jpg File: Short for JPEG (joint Photographic Experts Group), a .jpg is an image file format that uses lossy compression that is adjustable to control file size related to image quality.

.pdf File: Short for Portable Document Format. This is basically a file created from one particular program in a format that is viewable on multiple platforms interdependent of the originating software.

.tiff File: Short for Tagged Image File Format. This is an image file format that is widely used in Graphics and desktop publishing.

.psd File: Adobe Photoshop’s native file format.

.ai File: Native file format of the popular graphics software Adobe Illustrator.

.png File: Short for Network Graphics. This is an image file format that uses “lossless” compression. It provides better quality than a .gif file.

We thought we’d make a couple of posts with some fairly common terms that we use when referring to your printing projects. We hope that this resource can help clear up any confusion you may have over references we make to your project.

Flexographic (Flexo, Ink) Printing: The transfer of ink to a substrate (material) using a photopolymer plate. There are two types of flexo printing: spot color where a plate transfers one color per plate, and four color process where four colors are used with a series of half tone dots to achieve a rainbow of colors.

Hot Stamp Printing: The transfer of foil ink to a substrate using a magnesium plate heated to approximately 300 degrees.

Embossed Printing: Stamping with a plate that has what needs to be embossed cut out so the material can be pushed up. Rotary embossing utilizes two photopolymer plates or two metal engraved cylinders: one male cylinder and one female cylinder that match each other.

Digital (Full Color) Printing: A method of printing that does not utilize printing plates as do other more traditional methods of printing. Large scale inkjet or laser printers put pigment or toner onto a substrate (material) and can reproduce colors from the customer’s digital art file extremely accurately.

Varnish: A top coating to either protect the label, give it a certain effect such as matte or gloss, or allow the material to receive other inks such as thermal or hot stamp.

UV Varnish: Does the same thing as varnish except that it is cured with UV light. It does not protect from UV light.

Knife Cut: To use a single or double blade die to cut the length of the label and trimming sides to the width needed so a custom die is not needed.

Plate: Usually refers to a printing plate – either photopolymer, flexographic, or a magnesium type for hot stamp.

Die: Any of the various types of tools used for cutting a label, tag, or any other custom product to a certain shape.

Custom Die: Any die shape or size that is not in the standard list, even if it is a simple shape such as a circle that is of a size we don’t have.

Die Cutting: The act of cutting a tag, label, or another custom product with the die.

Thank you to our Production Supervisor Arnold Clark and to our Process Engineer Roy Ziegler for their contributions to this post!

Replacing ink rollers is a fairly straightforward process. Please step through the following directions to replace an ink roller:

1.) Lift the ink roller holder until it is clear of the ink roller. (The holder is located on the metal part of the body, at the top near where the labels are dispensed.)

2.) Turn the marker on its side over a trash can to discard the old ink roller.

3.) Carefully slide a new ink roller onto the ink roller shaft and slip the ink roller holder back to its original position.

Your ink has been replaced and your marker is ready to be used again! For a video tutorial on how to replace the ink, please visit our YouTube SpeedyMark® Ink Replacement Tutorial Video.

Understanding that often times instructions for reloading labels can be misplaced, we thought we’d put up a blog post to step you through the process as painlessly as possible. With that in mind, here are the steps to follow to replace the labels in your SpeedyMark® Price Marker:

1.) Pull open the Label Holder Arm by pulling slightly towards you and then upwards.

2.) Place the Label Roll onto the Label Spindle and shut the Label Holder Arm.

3.) Open the Bottom Cover by gently pinching the plastic tab and lifting the Bottom Cover away from the marker. Also, pull down the Print Base until it stops.

4.) Feed approximately 12″ of labels through the Throat of the marker, making sure it goes between the Sprocket and the upper part of the Print Base. (Note: this step is easier if you create a slight crease along the length of the labels.)

5.) Turn the marker upside down (so the print head is facing up towards you) and thread the labels through the slot in the Print Base.

6.) Lay the label stock over the Print Base and position a few Sprocket Spindles to line up with the holes in the label stock. Label stock will automatically feed out through the Operating Lever.

7.) Gently squeeze the plastic Lock Piece and shut the Bottom Cover.

8.) Squeeze and release the Operating Lever to dispense labels.

If you’re a visual learner like I am, the following SpeedyMark® Loading Instructions .pdf files would probably be of even more benefit to you. The steps are clearly listed out along with photos of each loading action:

Have you ever been confused as to the difference between trademarks and copyrights? Has there ever been a question in your mind as to whether or not you have the right to use a logo, well known product name or image in your own custom printed item? Well, read on and we’ll break it down for you as simply as we can.

First, let’s start off with the definition of “trademark.” According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (www.uspto.gov), a trademark is “a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination of words, phrases, symbols or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.” It’s a fairly straightforward idea. But, what exactly does a trademark do?

I found a website at www.wipo.int/trademarks that defines very nicely what a trademark accomplishes.

“A trademark provides protection to the owner of the mark by ensuring the exclusive right to use it to identify goods or services, or to authorize another to use it in return for payment. The period of protection varies, but a trademark can be renewed indefinitely beyond the time limit on payment of additional fees. Trademark protection is enforced by the courts, which in most systems have the authority to block trademark infringement.”

“In a larger sense, trademarks promote initiative and enterprise worldwide by rewarding the owners of trademarks with recognition and financial profit. Trademark protection also hinders the efforts of unfair competitors, such as counterfeiters, to use similar distinctive signs to market inferior or different products or services. The system enables people with skill and enterprise to produce and market goods and services in the fairest possible conditions, thereby facilitating international trade.”

We strongly suggest here at PrintMyThing and PrintMyRibbon that you remember the above information before designing any custom printed products. Ask yourself, “Do I have the legal right to use this logo, word, phrase or design? Is it mine exclusively? Or “do I have permission from the trademark holder to use it?” If not, its advised that your protect yourself by not using the trademarked material in your custom creation.

Now what about a copyright? Are copyrights and trademarks the same? No, they protect different things actually. The U.S. Copyright Office defines “copyright” this way:

“Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U. S. Code) to the authors of ‘original works of authorship,’ including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. Section 106 of the 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

• To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords;
• To prepare derivative works based upon the work;
• To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or
other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending;
• To perform the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and
choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual
works;
• To display the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and
choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural
works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual
work; and
• In the case of sound recordings,* to perform the work publicly by means of
a digital audio transmission.”

The copyright.gov site adds, “It is illegal for anyone to violate any of the rights provided by the copyright
law to the owner of copyright.”

So again, we strongly suggest that before you incorporate any material into your custom design that may be copyrighted, please be sure you have the legal permission to do so. Our official position on designs that are submitted to us is as follows:

“The customer assumes full responsibility for all claims and/or litigation arising from alleged infringement of licenses, patents, or copyrights on any requested design or copy.” (See our website FAQ section.)

We hope that this helps with any questions you may have related to trademarks and copyrights.

In our constant effort to provide not only the best products in all areas but also the best and most efficient way to order them online we have undertaken a massive project that requires us to rename the images we use. Normally this might require simply arranging everything in an ascending order and replacing with a numbered list. This time isn’t that simple, so I took the challenge of finding a tool that could rename thousands of files from an old name to a new name via a spreadsheet that contained both. Simply put I had an excel document with two columns…Column A had the old (current) filenames and Column B had the new filenames. I went on the lookout in all manner of websites, blogs, forums until I came across this site… ( http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/rename-multiple-files-bulk-excel-googl-docs/2481/ ) Being a Mac guy, this hurt a little as the technique requires the use of DOS to complete the filename change. I decided to move forward with this technique nonetheless and found that it worked perfectly to rename 3000+ jpgs…Awesome! Again here’s the link to the technique…enjoy!
